I was relaxing on a beach, soaking in the sunrise, when I realized my nomad dream came true.

As a teenager growing up in Poland, the former communist country, life was already set. Get good grades, find an office job, settle down. But I rejected that status quo.
Formal education wasn’t for me, and I struggled with English. The most popular foreign language for my generation. Regular jobs were mundane and infested with office politics. I had zero desire to spend my entire existence within my native nation.
I wanted to experience the world. My aim was to escape Polish provincialism. I had already envisioned living out there. Eye-opening books about Japanese life sat on my nightstand. Counterculture American graphic novels filled my backpack. Wacky Australian radio shows played on my headphones. And most importantly, exploration action-adventure video games inspired my imagination. How might I reach these destinations?
I hoped I could travel forever and experience cultures like a local
Traveler, vagabond, digital nomad — these were the identities I wanted to adopt. I knew I could achieve that if only I earned money while roaming the globe. Location independence was my hope.
Rejecting the 9-to-5 office job meant rejecting the typical two-week vacation. To immerse myself in a foreign culture, I needed to stay in places for months or longer. So I studied the lives of correspondents, adventurers, flight crew, and anyone else who traveled for a living.
Finding a similar path would allow me to live among the locals. To experience cultures in person instead of through someone else’s eyes. To taste genuine food, learn languages, admire exotic landscapes, and mingle with intriguing people. That was the adventurous life I sought.

20 years later, my digital nomad dream is better than I ever imagined
My parallel career as a web developer and tour manager unlocked travel freedom. Being tech-savvy allowed me to work from anywhere. Long before the "digital nomad" term was popularized. Simultaneously, guiding tour groups around the world taught me crucial travel skills. Now flight planning, logistics, crisis management, and cultural awareness are my second nature.
What I didn’t expect was the impact on my relationships. I lost touch with most of my Polish friends. But I gained new, meaningful friendships with fellow nomads and locals. I earned the privilege of sharing their fascinating stories on my podcast. Connections await wherever I travel. And most importantly, nomading led me to the love of my life.
