Five years have passed since I last worked as a tour manager. Yet introducing my partner to the island of Tenerife was a perfect opportunity to jump back into this role. I was thrilled to show her one of my favorite destinations around the so-called Little Continent.

Tenerife is known for its incredible diversity. Volcanic eruptions created Teide, the highest peak in Spain, and a mountain ridge that splits the island in the middle. This formed plenty of microclimates: from the dry, rocky southern region, to the temperate pine forests around the mountains, up to the lush jungles in the north. Hence the concept of Tenerife being as diverse as a continent.

Sunset in Garachico

During my past tenure in Nine Coliving, our favorite community activity was to gather on the rooftop and observe dramatic sunsets. In fact, the whole western coast of Tenerife is positioned in a way that makes the setting sun spectacular. And Garachico is one of these significant spots to experience it.

This lovely small town is placed in a narrow space between steep hill and rocky cove. A characteristic large roque with a cross on top overlooks the town, while the main road follows the curly coast. Garachico offers exciting rock pools, a historical port, a chill old town square, and panoramic viewpoints. The last significant lava eruption happened here in 1706, marked by still visible black marks on the hills.

Volcano eruption drills

Since Garachico still faces possibility of natural disaster, we were pleased to learn about the safety precautions. The local government conducted a full-scale drill. The roads around Garachico were closed, as the rescue teams were training evacuation scenarios.

Additionally, everyone on the island received emergency alarms. For myself, it was the first time to experience this loud iPhone siren with full-screen text and warning icon. The text was delivered in Spanish and in the language set in the iOS.

While volcano eruption in Tenerife is statistically low, I'm glad that the locals prepare for it. And that they use modern technology to notify residents and visitors alike.
